Members of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Migration are inspecting the Lindela Repatriation Centre in Krugersdorp west of Johannesburg.
They include ministers Mamoloko Kubayi from Justice and Constitutional Development, Ronald Lamola from International Relations and Firoz Cachalia from Police.
President Cyril Ramaphosa established the committee to spearhead government’s five-pillar strategy to tackle migrations issues.
The visit comes amid protests across the country against undocumented migrants.
Congolese national Curtris Dibayo is among irregular migrants awaiting deportation at the centre.
“We are just waiting for deportation, and unfortunately when it comes to my country DRC, they do not deport us. We really want to go home and fix our papers. I have been here since 2018. I did not enter this country illegally. We have been trying to contact our government; they are still quiet. We have lawyers in Congo. We are trying, but there’s nothing,” adds Dibayo.
This morning the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Immigration conducted an oversight visit to Lindela Repatriation Centre. The focus was to evaluate the facility’s capacity and operations, alongside assessing the court that supports the deportation process. pic.twitter.com/OtTmd6Ue22
